Whitney Hartman's body of work stems from a variety of influences throughout her life. Well-known illustrator, C.F. Payne proved to have a substantial impact on her. During her internship with Payne, she was taught that having as many visual references as possible was the key to creating an illustration that works.

"Sketch, layout, reference, reference, reference, good drawing then execute your finish."
- C.F. Payne

Norman Rockwell, who created hundreds of illustrations throughout his career used anything and everything he could as reference for his paintings. From those references, he was able to capture the facial expressions, movements, etc. of his subjects.

Whitney states, "Whether I'm picking up a paintbrush or sitting at my computer ready to design; I always have my references gathered." For illustrations, she finds people, animals and objects that work well with her concepts and photographs them in staged environments. Graphic design requires her to gather imagery, verbiage and sketch out thumbnails to execute a finished product. For product designs, she photographs materials and existing products needed to use as the framework for each design.

She believes, "With good reference, I am able to develop anything that comes to mind. I am very fortunate to have been taught many valuable lessons from Mr. Payne and hope that my illustrations rightfully display his teachings."
